SCCC Library receives ALA humanities grant

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College Library has been selected as one of 200 libraries nationwide for the American Library Association’s American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries opportunity, an emergency relief program to assist libraries that have been adversely affected by the pandemic.
With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the SCCC Library will use funds to anchor itself in the community as a strong humanities institution. The competitive award comes with a $10,000 grant that will help the library deliver excellent programs and services related to culture, history, literature, and other humanities subjects.
The grant will be used to fund the “Saints Scribes” program, which is a speaker series of authors, poets, and other experts to give presentations on humanities topics and writing workshops for students, faculty, and members of the community.
Participants in the program will receive journals to write in and the library will provide weekly for them to write about. The purpose is to encourage journaling and the participants would write about their daily activities as well as the grant presentations and current programming at SCCC.
The participating libraries, selected through a competitive, peer-reviewed application process, include public libraries, academic/college libraries, K-12 libraries, and tribal, special and prison libraries. The recipients represent 45 states and Puerto Rico and serve communities ranging in size from 642 residents in Weir, Kansas, to the city of Los Angeles. Libraries were chosen with an emphasis on reaching historically underserved and/or rural communities.
“We are so proud to be chosen for this amazing opportunity,” said Casandra Norin, director of library services. “This grant will allow our library to better serve our patrons and plan strong, enriching humanities programming as we come out of the pandemic.”

SB 496 & HB 2662 have become SB 58
Senate Bill 496 and House Bill 2662 have become Senate Bill 58. This new version keeps the language of SB 496 (paraphrasing) that a parent has a right to see what their child is being taught and the parent has the ability to lodge a reconsideration of materials used in School Districts. Both Houses have approved Conference Committee Reports (Agree to Disagree) as of April 1, 2022. As of this writing this is the last activity on SB 58.
Mystery Writing Workshop Possibility for a Library Program
Steven Kolbe contacted the System Office and asked that the Office relay that he and his family are traveling the State during the last two weeks of June and are scheduling his Mystery Writing Workshop with different libraries along the way. He has extended an invitation to any library to possibly schedule a workshop at your library by reaching out to him for a possible date. Since he is already in the area he states that he would only charge mileage between libraries as the cost of the workshop. You will need to visit with Steven for particulars.

On Wednesday, April 20 at 1:00 pm Central Time, the Niche Academy is offering another free webinar. This webinar is over “Library Patrons’ Privacy: How to Navigate Concerns with Emerging Technology”.
“It is imperative not only to ensure that patrons have an excellent experience, but also that their rights to privacy and intellectual freedom are protected.” This webinar will address these issues in a library setting as we continue to stay up to date on emerging technologies for our patrons while still considering their rights.

It is time to check your brief bibliographic records in VERSO:
- Circ reports — Run reports — Brief bibs from circulation
- Select type: Brief bibs — Select a library: (Your entire collection) — Dates: 01/01/2007* and today’s date — Sort by: Call number. Note: Choosing 01/01/2007 will capture EVERY brief bib ever created in your library since SWKLS purchased VERSO in 2007.
- Open the workbook in Excel, delete unwanted columns, print, and check the shelves to see if
- 1) Do these items exist?
- 2) No–Delete!
- 3) Yes–Delete the brief bib, replace the barcode, and copy-catalog the item with a complete record.

Organization Challenge April 25-29th
In honor of Get Organized Day, which is on April 26th we are doing an Organization Challenge. The Organization Challenge will start on April 25th to April 29th. Every day we will send out a daily challenge with a five-minute video with tips and tricks to help with your workflow. We will have a small questionnaire or little task for you to complete. Those who participate will get their names in the drawing. We will draw for three winners. They will receive an Amazon gift card.
