Greeley Co Get into the Halloween Spirit

Greeley County Library is currently running our 10th annual Pumpkin Patch! We decorate the lot south of the library on Broadway to fit the season with pumpkins, mums, hay bales, scarecrows, corn stalks, milo, etc. Then each of the elementary classes PK-5th grade reserves a time to come. They begin inside with a story, then make a craft, then go outside to pick out their own pumpkin to take home. This year we added a maze made of orange fencing (borrowed from the fair carnival, use your community resources!) and a scarecrow photo op to our outdoor games. A local farmer lets us use his antique pickup on the lot as well. The Pumpkin Patch has become a local favorite activity and photo op for many in the community.

New Template Policies on SWKLS Wiki – Richard

This past week I have been able to settle down a bit and finish up some projects. I have updated the template policy for Disaster Prep and Recovery with attachments included now. This has been in the works since the TechDay+ Session that Steve and I did. I mentioned during the session that the policy was on the wiki but not the attached forms. They are now present.

The template policy for Meeting Rooms, Public Performances, and Exhibits has been added to the Wiki as well. If you would like to view these templates the can be found through this link. As always these templates are in Word so you are able to download the file and edit them to suit the conditions that might be specific to your library.

From the SWKLS Pro Collection

Since running a small library―public, academic, school, or special―often means making do with little or no staff, this challenging task calls for its own set of skills and expertise. That’s where Moorman’s how-to manual comes in, offering guidance on every essential aspect of what it takes to run a small library. Fully revised and updated, including a new chapter on digital library services, the second edition covers such day-to-day issues as

  • Budgeting, from planning to advocacy
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures
  • Maintaining facilities
  • Acquisition, cataloging, and collection development and management on a shoestring
  • Circulation
  • Programming, outreach, and community partnerships
  • Library technology, from computers and networks to automation systems and beyond

Also featured is an updated resource section listing furniture, automation, book, and periodical vendors; electronic discussion and support groups; professional organizations; and resources for more information. This book is a must-have for any solo librarian or library manager with a small staff.
