POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Technology Specialist maintains and deploys network components, servers, and desktops at member library locations. In addition, this position troubleshoots problems, provides remote, phone and onsite support to member libraries, and assists in training library staff. Daytime travel to member libraries is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains networking environments and system configurations; performs system installations; and defining and documenting system standards.
  • Maximizes network, server, and desktop performance by monitoring, diagnosing, and resolving problems and by scheduling upgrades.
  • Maintains and administers computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements network security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware.  
  • Operates master consoles in order to monitor the performance of computer systems and networks.
  • Configures and tests computer hardware, networking software, and operating system software.
  • Configure, monitor, and maintain virus protection, filtering software, and system backups.
  • Provides technical assistance to member libraries by telephone, remote access/deployment, and onsite visits, including software and hardware installation and upgrades, troubleshooting, security upgrades, and other areas as needed.
  • Assist with advanced web page development, servers and systems, and applications platforms.
  1. Assist with technology assessments for member libraries.
  1. Maintain knowledge of hardware and software trends and emerging technologies by engaging in continuing education and professional development activities.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:

The physical demands to perform this job are the ability to talk and hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb a ladder, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate technology devices and equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

DECISION MAKING:

Budget decisions must be made in communication with,and subject to approval of, the Technology Manager and the System Director.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

Regular hours are M-F, 8:00am-5:00pm; Comp time may be applied if travel disrupts regular hours.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Ability to operate a vehicle, and hold a valid personal driver’s license. Use of personal vehicle and frequent travel, including some overnight travel, is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years experience in computer science, data communications, information systems or related course work and two (2) years full-time, hands-on administrative experience in a LAN/WAN environment is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Previous experience with PC hardware and software applications is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field; computer repair; working knowledge of LAN and WAN; specialized education such as Microsoft certification; WWW development, and computer applications, and experience with automated library systems.
