Greeley County Library Wraps Up Summer Library Program
From Ginger Gibson, Librarian at Greeley County Library in Tribune, KS, here is “a selection of pictures from Greeley County’s Color Our World Summer Reading program. These photos are from various programs and activities we enjoyed through the month of June, from our Kickoff with Jay & Leslie through our story & craft sessions, PBS, Dan Dan the Magic Man, and our final Color Party. We awarded prizes using a prize wheel (thanks to help from Sara!), then went outside for a Color Powder War. We are looking forward to a more normal level of busyness!

What a fun, colorful, and creative time they had! Way to go, Greeley County Library! 🙂 Those look like some happy patrons!

July is Disability Pride Month

This week marks the beginning of Disability Pride Month, recognizing the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as celebrating and educating about disabled culture, history, and community. The recognition of Disability Pride Month began in 1990 with the first parade being in 2004 in Chicago, IL. It has since spread, empowering those with disabilities to celebrate their unique place in the world and to take pride in who they are.
Disability Pride month celebrates those with visible as well as invisible disabilities. It’s about challenging ableism and embracing that a life lived on one’s own terms is meaningful, valuable, and worthy of inclusion, dignity, and respect.

Some famous authors with disabilities that you may wish to highlight this month include Christy Brown; Helen Keller; Truman Capote; Stephen King; Stephen Hawking; Temple Grandin; Jenny Lawson; Hilary Mantel; Christopher Reeve; Michael J. Fox. Here is a list of books coming out in 2025 with a disabled or neurodivergent lead. Here’s a list of 20 Great Books, All By Disabled Authors.
Librarian App Alert! : Novel Effect!
You. Guys. I went to NWKLS this week and a teacher librarian demonstrated this app and it is amazing!! It is for public and school librarians. Parents can download it, too! It takes your storytime from 2D to 3D by adding soundscapes to your story that are responsive to your voice and keep pace with your reading! Watch the video below to see a demonstration!

All librarians and library and information science scholars can benefit from learning more about intellectual freedom. This book relies on research and practical real-world scenarios to conceptualize and contextualize it.
Practicing Intellectual Freedom in Libraries is helpful for a wide range of people, from those only starting to learn about intellectual freedom to those more well-versed in the subject. For novices, it offers a solid introduction to intellectual freedom, grounded theoretically and empirically; for more experienced scholars and librarians, it provides a uniquely comprehensive analysis of intellectual freedom.
Intellectual freedom is important for librarians because it is a foundation of the profession and is truly central to librarianship in the United States. Situating intellectual freedom within freedom of speech theories, this book explains the legal and theoretical foundations for contemporary understandings of intellectual freedom within library science. Additionally, it depicts the importance of community to implementing intellectual freedom and exemplifies this importance in a discussion of actual library practices. Real-world scenarios provide a timely look at intellectual freedom in context, discussing Internet filtering, collection development and weeding, meeting rooms and exhibit spaces, programming, and fake news and misinformation.

New text scam making the rounds

If you have gotten a text message this spring saying you have an unpaid toll or other driving violations, you are not alone. Recent reports this spring claim this has been on the rise (after a quick search of my blocked messages I found 4 such messages). In one of the texts I received, I was threated with ‘late payment fees’ or ‘license or registration enforcement actions’. Often such scams will try to scare you into believing inaction will have more consequence if you don’t ‘act now’.

In examples such as this, never trust the number or link provided if you don’t recognize the number or email. For the sake of argument, you want to make sure there really is no issue, call your DMV and speak with someone on how to proceed. If you suspect the ‘fine’ would be from KTAG, they switched to a direct to mail billing last year for those driving through the Kansas turnpike without being part of Ktag.
