12 Things SWKLS: 2018 Thing 6


Welcome to the sixth thing in 12 Things SWKLS 2018.  I know most of you are in the middle of Summer Reading, so I am going to try to take it easy on you this month.

The activities for this lesson are due June 30 at 11:59 pm central time and are worth 2 credit hours.  Estimated work time:  1-2 hours.  Please complete all activities.

If you would rather complete an alternate topic, please go to the alternate topic page and pick one from the list.  You are also welcome to choose past topics or topics from the first round of Things.

If you get stuck and need help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Exercises:  (Due June 30, 2018 at 11:59 pm CDT)

Tools you will need:

  • A computer with a browser or a tablet, smart phone, or other device.
  • An Internet connection.

Activity 1: (15 min – 1 hour)

Pick one of the following:

  1.  Show the Library Mobile App for VERSO to a library user.
  2. Post a poll on your library’s Facebook page.  Some examples are below.

  3.  Share a library service or tip with a coworker or library user.
  4.  Pick a topic from the Alternate Things.  A good choice is Google Search Tips and Tricks.

Activity 2:

  1.  Post down below which activity you chose and what you learned.
  2. Reply to at least one other person’s comment.

  1. I chose to do a poll. I was wondering how people were doing them and I was so glad that this was one of the classes. I decided to do a poll about the new mobile library app.
    I would like to do more of these polls down the road.

    1. Even though I didn’t choose to do the poll for my “thing” this month, I, too, look forward to learning about them and using them more. I think it could really increase engagement on our library page whether the poll is for fun or library related.

  2. I choose to do Google photos. It is handy but I am not completely sold on it. Especially in my job. I almost feel like it is just another program. The search bar is a cool idea but it is not always perfect. It recognizes somethings but not others. It is designed to go with their labeling idea, not just a true random search. Therefore it is really a glorified album search or a secondary album search. Again, helpful perhaps in the personal world or if you are needing to search through alot of people. I can see this would be really helpful to children and teen librarians!
    The coolest thing about google images is that you can undo all of the edits you have done to a picture at any given time. Instead of having to save multiple copies of the same picture you can always just revert it back to the original. Personally, as far as my job is concerned, I probably wont use it very much. That however, might have more to do with the nature of my personal job, cataloger and ILL, than Google photos itself.

  3. I chose to do a poll, and with National Donut Day being June 1st I decided to use it to my advantage (as my “homework”). I’d never done a poll before and was itching to do one but needed an excuse! I was surprised by the response! My question was favorite donut and options were plain glazed or filled frosted, and instead of just voting between those two choices I actually had several people comment what they’re ACTUAL favorite donut was, which the majority was cake donuts, a shocker! I felt like the poll got the audience interested and participating, on a different level than just a regular post/share would! I’m hoping with the comments and votes that we will show up on their newsfeed more, battling that darn Facebook algorithm!!

      I like the idea of doing a poll that addresses something other than library related! There are so many fun holidays, we will have to keep an eye out for something fun to do!

    I choose to do a poll and involved Sara because she does our history here in Cimarron. We wanted to get feed back on what our viewers would like to see more of. I think that we should get more of our patron opinion on things happening in our library. We want to have happy patrons and be accommodating them as to what the people like and not just what we think they might like. So many young and old have facebook and that is a great way to take advantage of using the poll and get that needed input without having to do so face to face. There will be more poll questions happening in the future!

  5. As you saw we did a poll about our kick off. We plan to do a poll at the conclusion of Summer Reading to see how patrons would feel about changing up when and how we do Summer Reading. After our app training I showed two of our High School girls how to install and use the app. They were really excited about it, especially the scanning and saving books to a list!!!

      1. I agree with doing a Post Summer Reading poll. It would be an easy way to get feedback from patrons to see what we could’ve done differently that might work better next year.

      I hadn’t even thought about telling the kids about the app. They’re the ones who would probably use it! Good idea! I’ll have to remember that!

    2. I like the idea of a poll at the end of Summer Reading. Maybe I’ll do one for the webpage also to hit more patrons. With everything else going on in June, it is hard to get attendance at programs. We’ve got readers, they just go elsewhere for things to do!

    We did a poll about changing the place of an event. I think it helped us decide and it gave patrons a chance to chime in with how they felt.
    The library app is very exciting and we have shared with our co-workers and can’t wait to start sharing with patrons! It will be a great way to try and reach even more people!

  7. I did a poll asking if people were going to use their local library this summer. I did this on my personal facebook page as I don’t have access to the library facebook. I am glad that this was one of the things. I think we will use this poll on our facebook in the future. Great one for June. Thank’s Janelle!!

      I like that! It is a simple and quick question for a yes or no answer and it also lets you know how many people you may see during the summer. I think I will try posting that. 🙂

    2. Ooo! I can only imagine the options you can put as for what they’re using the library for this summer if they are; for the A/C, the programs, the books/movie rentals, the free babysitting! Oh my, did I type that?? LOL!!! 😀

    I chose to teach someone about the Library Mobile App. They found it very handy that they could be in a store and be able to look up right there on their phone if the library had the book that they were ready to buy. They also agreed that the app is very user friendly and easy to navigate, along with enjoying that they can look and see what books they have checked out or what their children may have checked out and they didn’t know. All around I think this app is wonderful and pretty sure our patrons are really going to like it.

    I chose the Library Mobile app. I first taught it to the other library assistant at our library. I have since showed it to a couple of patrons who have downloaded it and begun using it. One used it to look up books in our catalog she was wanting to use in summer tutoring. The other has children who check out books and will be able to see what her family has checked out. I think this app can be very useful & will continue to share it with patrons!

  10. I chose to teach Ronna about the Library Mobile App after Ginger showed it to me. =) I have also shared it with patrons who are happy to see how easy it is to use. They especially liked the features that lets them see what they have checked out and the capability to make lists. We have also had patrons use it to place holds on materials they needed. Everyone likes the scan feature to be able to look up a book they are considering buying.
    One problem I had was when we had a “newly wed” try to log in it wouldn’t accept her password. Even though we had changed her name in our system, we had forgotten to change her password as well. DUH!! Once I updated that it all worked smoothly.

  11. I shared the library mobile app with a sister-in-law who usually texts me to renew her books. She was so excited and was able to search, log in, and explore the app by herself. She text me screenshots of her getting into her account. The $50 was probably worth it for just her, haha. I also shared the library mobile app with my board during our last board meeting. Two of the board members asked for their card information and went back and set it up. One is using it regularly and tells us about it. The other put holds on books and thought it was great (hmmm, been able to do it for years, but now it’s at their fingertips). I love being able to share this new technology with our patrons.

      The director, Laurie, went to the APP class for our library. I will need to look at the paper work she brought back and see about putting it on my phone. It would be very handy for me when I am out and about seeing books and being able to check if we have them in our inventory or not. And knowing how it works will help me promote it to ourpatrons.

  12. I chose to do a poll. Since the conversation has come up amongst staff I asked what patrons thought of having a library cat! It may never get farther than a poll but it’s current to us. It will be interesting to see the response!

    I chose to do the alternate thing, “Take a Screen Shot”. Taking a screen shot is actually pretty simple. Sometimes I’m not able to explain what I am seeing on the screen when a problem pops up so being able to show it, through a screen shot, to whom ever I am working with can help greatly. I know I can use this at home when I need tech support for a computer issue. I’m sure I will use it here at the library also, if I can’t explain what I see on the screen. I’m not sure what tip I might share with a patron untill the opportunity presents itself. But, I like the idea of showing patrons how to do it so that they can email a screenshot of a book they would like to read.

  14. I did the Verso Library App. Well. Not like to a patron, but to the newspaper. They just came in to do a newspaper article on the new library app and I talked all about how awesome SWLKS staff were in getting this to happen and the power of shared resources when it comes to making something like this affordable to all of our member libraries. So yeah. I did this one.
