The Lego Labs were started by Charlene McGuire with funds from a LSTA Grant to create mobile technology kits. There are 2 lab kits. With these kits, children can build their own scenes and create their own stories. As one of our libraries commented, they can be used for children to create their own graphic novels.
Each kit contains the following:
- 2 Laptops
- 2 Lego Curriculum Packs
- 2 Lego Space Packs
- 2 Lego Fairy Tale Packs
- Curriculum Guides
- Long Surge Protector
- A camera (old smartphone)
These kits are for groups of 2-4 children per laptop. Lego suggests the kits for ages 6-13, but our libraries have discovered that they have been better suited to and are very successful with middle school to high school age children. You are welcome to check out one kit at a time or two kits. Most of our libraries have been checking out two kits at a time.
If your library is interested in borrowing one or both, please fill out this form: https://goo.gl/forms/LJCFiSkvEMGVlBAX2 and Janelle will contact you to schedule delivery. Delivery will also include training.
Lego discontinued the StoryStarter Kits on June 30, 2017. The software can still be download and we can still use the Lego Kits, they just aren’t manufacturing them anymore. Lego will still honor the warranty and support until June 30, 2019. To learn more go to: https://education.lego.com/en-us/support/storystarter/faqs In the next year, we will decide how we want to continue with the kits, but for now they are available to borrow from us.
Savannah did a presentation on Lego StoryVisualizer (the Lego story software) at the STEAM Workshop on Oakley on September 15. Her presentation can be found here. Prior to this workshop and afterwards, a few of our libraries installed the StoryVisualizer software on someof their patron machines. If you are interested in doing this as well, contact one of us and we will be glad to install it for you. There is also an app version of the software available in the Apple and Android app stores.
