By Shannon Roy—Continuing Education Coordinator, State Library of Kansas
July - August Newsletter Excerpt

The first Reaching for Excellence Administrative Training Program was on public library administration in June. It was very successful, partly because of the talented training team from Wichita, and partly because of the lively classmates. The State Library staff has also been busy planning the second Reaching for Excellence Administrative Training Program, which will be on Issues in Library Technology. This program will be on Thursday, October 23, and Friday, October 24.  Read more…

    CONTINUING EDUCATION GRANTS

The importance of training and education to Southwest Kansas Libraries System member libraries has been consistently recognized and expressed by member library directors and boards, system board members, staff and administration. It is fitting that SWKLS budgets funds to offer grants to supplement what libraries are able to provide, in financial support for southwest Kansas library employees and trustees who want to take advantage of educational programs. The grants provide financial aid toward improving the library skills of the recipient and enabling him/her to become better informed about library management and services. Personnel and trustees of taxing county libraries and libraries contracting for two or more services including Continuing Education and Training are eligible to apply. SWKLS offers two types of continuing education grants. The application period is open February 15-28, May 18-31, and August 18-31.

    CE Credit Update

       By Sara McFarland, SWKLS Consultant

May - June  Newsletter Excerpt

I’ve had some questions about just how to count CE credits for classes/sessions/ workshops that you have attended outside of a SWKLS workshop. As an example, if you attended the Kansas Library Conference in April and went to some really good workshops just how should you count your CE credits? Photocopy your name badge or registration so that we know you were there, then send in the session list from your registration folder with the sessions highlighted or the personalized session list you created from the website. Each hour you are in the session/workshop, you count that as a credit. So if it was a 3 hour session, you will have 3 hours credit; if it was a 1 hour session, you will have 1 hour of credit.  Entertainment sessions such as the keynote, the luncheon’s, the Talent Show, etc. don’t count as training. Read more…

By Shannon Roy—Continuing Education Coordinator, State Library of Kansas
July - August Newsletter Excerpt

Forty-three Kansas library trustees from twenty-two libraries have completed training in all five trustee core skills and are now certified trustees. Members of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Board were the first to complete the certification requirements, with the help of Ellen Miller Group. John Flower of Basehor wished to complete his certification before acting as a trustee trainer and did so at the Kansas Library Association Conference. Jack Havenhill also pursued certification before becoming a trustee trainer.  Read more…
